Royal court gown by LadyCafElfenlake Royal court gown by LadyCafElfenlake
my 1740's royal court gown i made to wear at a ball in october. 12 meter brocade fabric in a dark nougatbrown with golden lace and rhinestones as decoration on the stomascher infront. it is almost the same as my yellow francaise, only longer and with pocketopenings in the skirt. mostly handsewn and it took about a week to finish!
see it in movement here : [link]

Is there a high definition version of the video in existence?

sadly no, it was filmed with a low definition camera, 8 megapixels...

hmm I have not worn it more than twice, so there is not so many pictures of it, and the second time it had been stashed for some time and i didnt have time to iron it so it was all a mess in wrinkles! XD

Very impressive! I went to watch the video, now please tell me: how tough is it to walk around when you are as wide as you are tall? It seems a near impossible task.

thank u! haha yeah, oddly enough you forget how big you are and is simply reminded everytime you smack in to something and goes like "oh, thats right..". to have an ordinary 18th century bumpad or pockets makes you very flexible, something you definitely are not in this, so you have to lern a whole new pattern of walking, and if there isn't any room, your stuck, very stuck, the only thing you can do to make yourself smaller is to go sideways basically... i read that if a lady back then could gracefully dance a menuett in a dress like this (this is actually not that big for a courdress, mine is 170 cm long wich is quite a basic courtdress measurement, there are those that were 120 cm per side wide..)but if you could dance in it you were like THE lady who had it all and everyone would respect you for life whatever happened, so it seemes even born highsociety ladies back then had problems!:D

Question, ring and bracelets, over the glove or under?

um, i think in the 18th century few wore gloves like this, i've mostly seen it like this in royal portraits and then jewelry is worn under! mittens were more fashionable back then where you showed your fingers, but in the late 19th and 20th century i think you wore jewelry over the gloves cause you were supposed to wear your gloves as a lady everywhere :)

Is it free-standing? Quite an interesting dress.

how do you mean free standing? you mean if it stands on the ground then no, it is a grand pannier inunder that hangs by my hips, i have no idea why it doesn't crumble down cause of the weight of the fabric, it's a mystery for me even tho i have it right in front of me..:D

That style looks wildly uncomfortable. I've always wondered, is it? And how do you sit down? xD Gorgeous work though!

thank you! it's not that uncomfortable, you just feel extreeemely helpless in it cause you can't do much on your own, so you do understand the need of gentlemen and servants..;) and i can sit down in it, i have a little film of me moving around in it, think i will post it on youtube, then i can send you a link so you kan see, i can reduce it upwards but not sidewise.
